I thought they died precisely when the Tain shattered, from a magical backlash or being sucked into one of those voids or rocks falling on them or something. I didn't read it as their dying of old age or starvation in the accelerated timeframe; I agree that if they were left there they would have survived and, probably, escaped sooner or later.
