The Trow-Forest Giant rivalry was probably inspired by Tolkien, where the Trolls are basically a distorted race of Ents created by Sauron (just as the Orcs are the twisted chilren of the Elves). So the Trow were most likely undead (or mutant, or whatever) Forest Giants to start off with--changed from living wood into dead rock.
