Aaargh. Ok, the essential basics of my theory. Or, rather, anti-theory. Mazzarin didn't reincarnate as anyone. He was a really powerful mage, but almost certainly not up the the power of a Great Hero or Leveller (Alric seems to make up for his lack of raw power through a mixture of luck, cunning and cheating). He couldn't have been Alric, as we know that Alric is the A spirit, who was, in Mazzarin's lifetime, in the form of Moagim, and so, if Mazzarin reincarnated as anyone, it would have to be Balor, which would have made Mazzarin the Great Hero at the beginning of the Wind Age who got defeated. And Mazzarin was killed by the Watcher, who was, at this time, an independent evil, therefore creating rather an anticlimax, considering that Great Heroes OUGHT to be killed by the forces of the Leveller.
There's more, but I can't be bothered to post it right now.
Oh, and el $ker, I know I'm rather going against both our theories here, but Mazzarin was the founder of the Nine, suggesting that he was an agent of Light of some kind.
