I think it was more of a really powerful spell instead of an actual elemental. Sorta like 'The Earth reaches up and grabs your enemies.' The narrator though it was alive 'cause of the shape of the spell.
It probably also took a lot out of old SB. Remember how wussy he was when the big D actually confronted him? All he did was run around in circles while he got torched. Suspicious to say the least…
