: "Rather like knowing his true name, only
: better." is a quote from "Silvermines,"
: this showing how the true name thing is most certainly
: a part of Myth, and most likely has as much
: implication as its roots, in the Black Company, as
: well as the thousands of other tales, lengends, and
: magicks which take this into account.
I've always thought that the true name thing is the same in the mythworld as it is in our world- a legend, with no basis in fact. As i mentioned in my other post, there isn't a single example (afaik) of it ever being used against anyone. And even if knowing a person's true name can harm them, the Silvermines quote quote disproves the arguement you were making in your previous post, which was "If it were her true name, she'd be killed by its use instantly", which was the point I was arguing against.
Also, in general, if saying a person's (or an archmage's) true name harms (or kills) them, then how do they find out what it is? Why don't parents simply make it completely unpronouncable so their kids are safe from it, or simply not give them a 'true name' at all?
