I think it should. In TFL, the Light had been struggling against the Dark and consistantly losing for 50 years. They were desperate; it seemed like they would be wiped out entirely. But they won, against all odds. In M2, they were a triumphant, rebuilt civilization, and though their cities were again wiped out and this time even more quickly, they had a known Great Hero with them, and 60 years of peace behind them. It couldn't seem nearly as desperate.
But in M3, they've had a *THOUSAND YEARS* of hiding in the shadows from the vicious claws of the Myrkridia, and just praying that they weren't hiding in the shadow of a Trow. The Dark has ruled the land of centuries and civilization is all but destroyed, just barely keeping a foothold. It should be very desperate.
