Well, the "Twice Born" narration--which happens on the same day--says that they engaged his main force two days ago, and have been steadily pushing it back; also that they lost almost half their soldiers, but that the Dark took even more casualties. Now that sounds to me like the outflanking and pinning down took place a while ago, and they're into the all-out war stage. But yeah, it might mean that they were trying to get past Soulblighter's main army to get at his personal guard.
