That's a trick as opposed to what's actually supposed to happen.. if you applied the same logic to the level Twice Born, soulblighter dies before he's supposed to(since it's possible to kill him on timid and mb higher levels).

I'm at school and can't double check this, but i'm pretty sure the two levels after "Shiver" happen on the same day as Shiver. If that's true (as i'm pretty sure it is), then there's absolutely no possible way the narrator could know about the events in Shiver at the time, and therefore his not mentioning anything is perfectly reasonable.
