Alric wasn't much more powerful (which is what i think you mean by "efficient").. he just had cool stuff. Dispersal dreams are a relatively common ability(even shades have them), and the Ibis crown gave him a bunch of power. As for Balmung, the sword itself is powerful, and most of Alric's skill with it can be attributed to the power gained from the crown.
