i was just reading david wellington's big rant in the delusions, and i think that the leveler returning as opposite theory is closer to the Tru7h. in which case connacht may well have been the leveler from birth. the only problem with this scenario's fulfillment is the one we've been having all along (i.e. alric actually beating connacht).
unless, of course, dw is even more correct that the leveler is a balancing force and moved over to alric when it realised that connacht-as-balor was pushing towards total destruction unless it gave some help to the other side (whether by turning alric into the leveler (is that why he was so efficient in myth 2, or was that just something bungie did differently for the feel of the game?) at some point or simply abandoning balor is up for grabs :).
my train of thought has just become derailed, so i'm going to stop here (i think all the major points have been addressed...) before i start to discredit this theory without somebody else's help. :)

: I recently stumbled across this, an old quote from
: Bungie's original Myth page, as recorded by Hamish
: Sinclair on the 15th of September in 1997: "The
: myth of the story centers around a deity which appears
: in this world in cycles of a thousand years. During
: one cycle the deity will appear as a Savior; in the
: next, as a Destroyer. At the beginning of Myth, he has
: returned in the guise of Destroyer, with the Fallen
: Lords, a group of resurrected and powerful generals.
: These beings and their legions of undead and spirit
: forces rise up to destroy the living beings of this
: world, while the player controls the living and tries
: to stop the onslaught. "
: So, the diety alternately returned as savior or
: destroyer, eh? I guess I was right about the Leveller
: back in the day, then; their original intent WAS for
: him to be a level-the-playing-field type of Leveller,
: not a level-their-armies-and-salt-the-earth type of
: Leveller. Of course, now this is all changed. They
: originally intended a 500-year Era too. Oh, sloppy,
: sloppy Bungie...
