Re: Mythicca - Halo's lost legends, re-uploaded

: Quite a project! Could be handy in tracking down the origin of some
: particular trick, something I've often made some effort to do when
: covering things at my site. I have a few questions here.

Thank you! Sorry for the late response, was away for the weekend.

I have done a first pass on finding original upload dates within video descriptions, and using the date first found in upload dates/descriptions. I have missed a few, mainly those within the HIH tricking archive, so those should be updated in the next re-index.

: - Can you give some estimate as to when all the search facilities will be
: operational?

A good chunk of the search features should be pushed to production this week. I still need to tag the categories for around half the videos, add the descriptions from wayback/archive.org videos. Maybe 2-3 weeks for the full search vision to materialize.

: - In the Videos section, I tried a search and it gave a few hundred results
: but they covered multiple Halo games. There's a 'Filter' panel on the
: right, which seems non-operational at present. In due course, will we be
: able to filter a search down to just H1? And even to a specific level?
: That would be highly desirable.

The games for all videos are 100% tagged and this I can probably push to production today/tomorrow. If you only need to search the primary titles, you can actually do this on the main video page, there is a search bar at the bottom of the page, and the filter button allows game filtering already. The advanced search bar at the top should, again, have this filtering toggle soon.

I thought about tagging specific levels, but with montages and machinima that use multiple levels, I deemed this too difficult to process reliably at 100K video scale. In order to really handle this task would require either training a model to process the videos, or by manually processing the videos, each would require more time than I have.

: - I see from the 'About' section that all videos have been re-encoded to
: H.264. Can you say anything about decisions made there in regard to image
: quality? After all, re-encoding generally entails a reduction in image
: quality. I downloaded a Ducain video, namely On Top of T&R, in Single
: Player , and compared it with the version I had, which I think was the
: original. Your file size is smaller by about 40%, but the image is quite a
: bit fuzzier.

Videos are re-encoded using the same bitrate that is found from the original video, a CFR value of 22 is typically used, which I have found to have no noticeable loss in quality. Ducain's videos I have found have small and large encoded videos, I may have used the smaller version for that particular video, or the encoding did indeed create quality loss. That video is using "toptrsp.mov" as the video sourced from the HIH archive.

: - A related question. When viewing vids at your site, is there any possibilty
: of being able to switch on some sharpening? I often use VLC for viewing
: videos, because its on-the-fly sharpening option can improve the viewing
: experience greatly.

That is a cool feature I was not aware of in VLC. I'll see if there are some JS endpoints exposed that can mirror this functionality, along with the "de-noise" feature. Creating these by hand may be tricky, as non-exposed JS APIs tends to be difficult to implement uniformly across browsers.

: - Something I noticed, relevant to Mac users. When in the Videos section, if
: I do ctrl-F for searching, what instead happens is that things
: unexpectedly go to full-screen. Looks like the 'F' is being detected in
: isolation, and taken as a request for full-screen. Can that be fixed?

Thank you for pointing that out! 'F' is indeed being detected in isolation, and I will correct that.
