'I dunno. There have been more painterly video game aesthetics out there, but they usually feel very off unless they're highly stylized and thus less "realistic".
I do feel like we've hit pretty diminishing returns in terms of actual geometry in games, and now it's all a question of what processing and post processing effects you turn on (the amount of difference raytracing support makes even with games like Minecraft and Doom being a good example.)
