In Response To: The Domain as a Method of "Time Travel" (Postmortem)

: I figured that title might get peoples' attention ("Time travel in Halo!
: Get it out of here" is usually the reaction I expect).

Right on the money.

: However, what I really mean is, now that the Domain has come into play in a
: larger way with Halo 5 how would you guys feel about it being used as a
: facilitation for near-unlimited narrative flashbacks?

: I could very easily see a spin-off series beginning, using the Domain in a
: way that's reflective of the Animus from Assassin's Creed. An ONI
: scientist starts investigating a terminal, and finds that he can relive
: historical moments that have been recorded in the Domain. This would allow
: the series to present similar themes and perspectives from various moments
: in the Halo timeline. I.E. the Human-Forerunner War, the Forerunner-Flood
: War, the San'Shyuum Schism, the Sangheili-San'Shyuum War, Etc... We'd
: finally get a chance to experience those historical battles from a
: first-person perspective.

How about we not do that?

There's something we Halo fans do where we hear about some obscure event in Halo's past, and we immediately want to know what happened. We want to see it for ourselves. We want a game and a series of novels set during the Insurrection, we want to fight in the Forerunner-Flood war, we want a comic series set during the Rainforest Wars, and we want another game set during the Human-Forerunner War. And I keep hearing it called "Exploration". People want a novel that "explores" Sangheili culture and UNSC culture, as if an interstellar species could possibly have one culture. Oh, and people wanted a novel that explored the foundation of the Covenant, until they got Broken Circle and realized that they were better off without.

The problem is, unless there's a decent story behind these events, what we'll get is just so much pointless worldbuilding at best. At worst (Which is what 343i is going to deliver) we get the Dune Prequels.

With the sole exception of most of Greg Bear's work, and Last Light, none of what 343i has done with the Forerunners has been good. The Human-Forerunner war inspires a particularly deep loathing that... look, you've heard me talk about Star Trek, right? Compared to the Human-Forerunner War and the Prometheans, I have nothing but warm fuzzy feelings for Star Trek. So anything that gives 343i more reason to fool around with the Forerunner is a definite "NO!" in my book.

On another note, the sort of framing device you have suggested has already been tried. Spartan...

*Checks Steam*

Spartan Assault had that whole "You're just a Spartan IV going through training simulations of prior battles" schtick, and it really didn't add anything to the game. I think it's best to go without.
