I've said before that leveraging our emotional ties to Chief and Cortana was the most effective part of the Halo 4 story. The problem with killing Cortana was the prospect of having to bring her back to life. It was never just a prospect, though. It was always an inevitability. Intellectually, I was aware and kind resented this even though I cried like a baby during that goodbye scene, which was so well done.

I didn't expect to say this, but I kind of like how they've handled it. I have enough doubt it's really Cortana, and regardless, the Cortana we knew really could be dead. In real life people as we know them sometimes (effectively) die, and sometimes that experience (their being there AND not there) is more grueling than when they DIE DIE.
