A lot of that negativity, I would say most of it, is directed at people being negative (which is still negative and not great, yes), and he was on the "343i is not complete shit" train long before you were. I'm still not satisfied with what you did with Spider either. He deserved a lot of what he got but there was more there, I would say there was hate on your part. Not only that but he, again, talked about the games, he went to events relating to them, he drew things relating to them, he made maps (he even made an ODST-inspired map, I almost suggested he remake it for your contest), but that was irrelevant because of stubbornness, calling out someone you don't even like or respect, and a picture that under different circumstances I could see you defending with a sort of "so what, it's politically incorrect" line. (For the record, I'm opposed that picture and its sentiment along with calling someone out like he did, but I find it interesting that you're apparently opposed to those things.)

As to the general principle, keeping anyone out is pretty much guaranteed to turn away people you don't want to keep out, and even besides that, sometimes in the choice between quality and quantity, it's better to choose quantity.
