I wonder how many of these titles that people say recent Halo games take after were in fact largely inspired by Halo's original gameplay. Sure, if that was the case, then they had only one place to go but to distinguish themselves in sometimes radically different ways. Why can't Halo do the same with its own future? I just don't see why Halo can't find some inspiration from current trends instead of staying largely in the past and build upon those building blocks. I would rather see 343i venture out after trial and error to make a new Halo core gameplay style than stick with we've played to death from 2001 to 2010.
