: I don't even think the issues with Locke not growing had to do with Colter,
: although I understand why people say he maybe isn't the strongest
: actor--it's that he had no one interesting to bounce off of. The
: second-in-command had little interesting to say and we got no real sense
: of their relationship prior.
: The Icelandic terrain was beautiful but sparse, and didn't help address the
: monotony that sort of set in for me. The Lekgolo created more questions
: than answers, and I didn't feel like they introduced questions I thought
: could have satisfactory answers. Wish it was the Flood, really. Since if
: the only point of the Hunter worms was to act as a force of nature to
: screw with Locke and co., the Flood would have not opened up these weird
: questions.
: Overall it certainly wasn't bad, but it was bland, and that kind of
: hurts more since FUD set us up to be pleasantly surprised. I think 343 has
: learned their lesson, and hopefully the partnership with Spielberg they
: focus more on the basics of storytelling.
I think a lot of this hit the nail on the head.
On paper, Nightfall sounds pretty awesome: "ONI team sent to shard of Halo ring undercover with a un-augmented Spartan-II to destroy dangerous deposit; end up stranded and must find a way off in 16 hours whilst being picked off by unstoppable threat."
I read that, and I think, "I want to see that." But the execution, as everyone is saying, left so much to be desired. None of the characters were relatable except for Aiken. He got more characterization than Locke, and it left me wondering if the script was originally written around his character but then refocused to center on Locke.
I have no doubt Locke might be a decent character in Halo 5. He's certainly found himself in an interesting scenario, and I think he's going to be a wonderful complement to Chief's situation. His interplay with the Arbiter already interests me from the two cutscenes we've gotten. But I just (as TDSpiral said) don't really care about him one way or the other at this point. He's not a dick.
The religious symbolism was much too apparent, and even forced at times (I blame Scott-Free 100% for this), and forcing the Lekgolo to be an "unstoppable force" without bothering to touch on them more after that point was... yeah, Flood would've been better, and less confusing. Didn't one of the second stories imply that these Hunters were already on the ring, not part of the Covenant that were left behind? If Hunters are intelligent, why couldn't the team even attempt communication with them? Why are they also apparently blind to anything non-technological? Why hadn't they eaten through large sections of the ring with the speed they seemed to consume/move at? Are the eyes on Hunters' armor added so that they can see normally, or does this mean Halo 5 will have a "Switch off tech" button that makes Hunters avoid you? Actually, that sounds kind of interesting, now that I've thought it. Turn off weapons, HUD, armor abilities, and shield in exchange for Hunters not seeing you. Might not have applications in a lot of situations, but it's an interesting idea. Regardless, answers to some of these questions would have been nice, since we saw a once intelligent alien devolved into tidal waves of angry monstrosities without explanation.
The second stories were just bad. A lot of them had visuals that matched what I've seen in some poorly produced fan films, and the acting in at least half of those was god awful, like the actors weren't given any context for what they were saying.
Also this:
And lastly (because I can't emphasize this enough: flying Hunters. I'm never gonna get over that. I was literally laughing out loud while Maser and Locke hid between those boulders in the last episode while the worms flew past their faces with no contact to the ground or each other.
For the first time ever, I'm not going to be buying a Halo product when this inevitably comes to DVD. Partially because the execution was so bad and goes against my perception of the Halo universe, but also because I just don't think there will be much value in rewatching it. I've kind of already learned everything I needed about what it adds to the universe, and I expect I'll see those details brought up elsewhere. Specifically interested in hearing how the Yonhet's humanoid form is explained in-universe, given that Halo doesn't have Star Trek's "common seed" thing going on. And I'll keep my fingers crossed that Aleria will show up again... that's certainly a different experience than we've been shown humans having on colony worlds.
