Why I'm truly excited for Master Chief Collection

Polygon - Sharing history with your son when your history is Halo

Soon enough, my older sister will give birth to her child and the months will pass as they grow out of temper tantrums and not pooping in their pants... hopefully. In any case, however, my brother-in-law has never really cared for Xbox and I'm not expecting him to want one any time soon. So how is my nibling going to ever experience the wonder of landing on a derelict ringworld with only a rifle, a pistol, and a smart, with girl to help them get back home. That's where I come in!

That's why The Master Chief Collection is such an appealing prospect. It's this strange form of living history where we all determine where gaming and science fiction has been and where it goes. Better yet, it's all on one disc, played with a single controller model, on just one console. Entirely accessable side-by-side, seamlessly, with a few button presses. So it will be simple. Halo, after 14 years, will be so amazingly simple to allow a person to dive head first into the universe.

Years ago, just barely out of diapers, my big sister busted out our NES, blew on some obtuse gray plastic cartridge, and my gaming experience began. Super Mario Bros. 3 was my very first video game. We spent hours and hours watching each other jump around like jelly beans and passing the controller back and forth. This iconic video game brought us to have fun where we would otherwise be fighting as siblings usually do.

Video games can bring people together. That's why I want to share Halo so much with my nibling. Teaching them the proper way to drive a Warthog is something that few today even know. It will be just one thing I can impart on them even if it's as seemingly inconsequential as manipulating pixelated movement. In time, maybe teach them how to act like a reasonable human in an online gaming setting even if it goes hand-in-hand with being a good person. Also, making them show the most extreme prejudice to people who abide by the original pistol.
