Speedrunner and forum-goer in non-residence Goatrope will be playing through the original Halo as fast as he can on June 26
th for donations, as part of Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ). SGDQ is an annual event (or biannual if you count Awesome Games Done Quick as the same thing) put on by
Speed Demos Archive (SDA) where people speedrun games (play them as fast as possible) and stream it on-line for donations. There are often prizes that can be won by donating a specific amount (or more than that) during a specific time, and people can bid to influence (to some degree) which games are played and to choose options such as the names of saved games. When it starts, you'll be able to watch it on
GamesDoneQuick.com or on SDA's Twitch channel,
SpeedDemosArchiveSDA (going to their site's front page during the marathon will redirect you to GamesDoneQuick.com). This year all donations from SGDQ will go to
Doctors Without Borders. Since the goal is to get through games as fast as possible, and various things including random chance can change how long that takes, the time and day that Halo or any game will be run might change. You can check the most recent time estimates
here.
This has been going for five or six years now (I've been following it since the third year, I think, and I've lost count of how many of these have happened) and it's gone from a quiet niche thing held in someone's basement for a few days to raising over a million dollars ( > $1,000,000 ) at the last Awesome Games Done Quick event. These people are serious about speedrunning, charity, and entertainment-- the confluence is truly awesome to behold, for example speedrunning the first world in Super Mario Bros. blindfolded because people gave thousands of dollars. As for Halo, Goatrope recently found a new trick to use in speedrunning Halo 1, which I assume he will show on the stream.
If you have schedule conflicts, you have about a month to fix them, and I suggest you do so, because if you watch one thing this June, if you watch one thing this summer, I think it should be this.
