On the other hand, they arguably still play a role at the heart of the present canon's story; namely the UNSC's determination to crush the Insurrection and the resulting creation of the Spartan-IIs, both influenced by the highly suspicious results of the Carver findings. More recent material underscores that the Spartans' creation right when they were needed was no coincidence. I'd really like to eventually know the exact relationship between the Precursors', the Librarian's and the Assembly's respective manipulations and plans.

The datapads' discussion of AIs being able to live independently in Slipspace (and Halsey's experiment in it going horribly wrong in some unspecified way) is echoed by later talk of the Domain and its connection to the Precursors and their possible survival. The discussion of making contact with their possible Covenant counterparts is echoed by HCEA terminal 3's portrayal of a Covenant AI with possibly similar goals.
