In Halo 1, 2 and 3 the Master Chief was the SPARTAN; the last option that humanity had to defeat this alien horde, we loved it as fans, because we were superior as a character and we could make the difference, Bungie made us the hero and we just had to work on that. As the extended universe came out, we saw that John wasn't alone, that there were some more SPARTAN II's left. But again, Bungie was so smart that when Halo 2 started, they dived us into a situation where the Chief didn't even have a change to get in touch with his old team, forget having them join him to Delta Halo. We were back into this story where the Chief was the only person who could do what was necessary, and that continued through Halo 3 also. Finally John finished his fight and he was able to sleep. The heroes journey was over.
Now I hate that franchises have to be stretched into profit making activities, but I shall not digress!
Halo 4 is set 4 years after Halo 3. In 4 years, and actually a little before that, we know that there were SPARTAN III's and now, SPARTAN IV's - 343, has actually, with the SPARTAN IV project made it that anyone can become a Spartan. So the question that has to be raised is, what is the MC now? Is he just another grunt? I mean, yes, the Librarian did something that made him immune to the composer, but the composer was destroyed. She also went on the lines that he had a preordained destiny which sort of blows up the entire thing that he was 'Lucky' and that everything was amazingly done, now 343 would have us believe that that was all going to happen.
What I'm getting at, is that the Master Chief has become just like a character in Call of Duty, yeah, he's the main character, but when the main character is wearing the same armour as everyone else around him (who are also younger than him) you have to ask how irrelevant have they made the Master Chief?
Plus, if you notice, at the end of Halo 4, there's a visible pause in the story. This means that for the first time since the entire Halo saga started, the Chief actually doesn't have a war to fight - I mean there are like a hundred SPARTAN's that would probably be doing ops without him. This means that he would be able to meet his old teammates, he would be able to visit the Voi memorial, he'd be able to take a literal vacation. Also, that for a man pushing 50, the Chief isn't in his youth anymore and (if the choice was up to him) I'm sure he might have even considered retiring.
I love the Chief, but I can't be the only one who feels that 343 is just replacing our kick-ass boot-stomping elite-skull-smashing Master Chief John 117 with a bunch of augmented grunts that take away from the awe and glee of being a seven foot Super Soldier?
P.S. I also hate that they (343 Industries) have turned Halsey into an enemy. Right up till Halo Reach, she was unhappy of what she did, and that she did what she did (to the Spartans) because it was necessary. Kilo 5 has changed that dynamic completely, so has Spartan Ops - they make her appear more ruthless, cold hearted and an over-around bitch.
But that's another story
