Trow Names

N.B. Most Trow names are not "good" Latin; they contain grammatical or spelling errors. It takes a little imagination to figure out what they're probably supposed to mean.

Igne Ferroque: "By Fire and Sword." It's used a lot in epic poetry. The Marathon level name was misspelled "Ingue Ferroque," which could be a slightly contracted translation of "By fire and groin." That's not the way I fight.

Tympanum Caput: Literally, "Drum Head." Presumably it's meant to mean the head *of* a drum, in reference to their reverberating footfalls.

Saxum Pugnus: "Stone Fist."

Pugil Stultus: Literally, "Stupid Boxer." "Pugil" can mean simply "boxer" but, more specifically, refers to boxers that use the caestus, a very nasty spiked glove.

Tonitrus Femuf: "Thunder Thighs." "Femuf" is probably a mispelling of "femur," which in Latin denotes not the bone but the whole thigh.

Auris Morsus: Literally, "Ear Bite." Probably meant to be "Ear-Biter."

Dolabra Index: "Pickaxe-Finger." Apparently this guy's learned Ryoga's rock-shattering forefinger attack.

Fractum Atrox: "Fractum" means "broken," "shattered" or "humbled;" "Atrox" means "fierce," "terrible" or "cruel." At least one of them has the wrong gender though, and they're just a pair of adjectives. Maybe it's meant to be "Shattering Ferocity?" Or, in a reference to their defeat by Connacht, "Ferocity Humbled?" I dunno.

Muglio Potens: I don't know any word "muglio," but "mugire" means to bellow (as an ox). So, perhaps "Powerful Roarer".

Acerus Malum: There is no word "acerus", but it could be "acerbus," in which case it might mean "Bitter Evil" or "Bitter Hardship," or, on the other hand, it might be "acer" in which case it might be "Maple Mast." Or it might be the OTHER acer in which case it might be "Sharp" or "Cutting Hardship." It's complicated by the fact that "malum" can mean four or five different things, as immortalized in the poem "Malo malo malo malo." This means "I'd rather be in an apple tree than be a bad man in adversity," and it doesn't even mention the "mast" meaning of "malum". Ah well, nobody cares.

Hebes Ictus: "Blunt Blow" or "Dull Stroke". I guess it refers to the fact that Trow don't use edged weapons.

Sanguis Ebriosus: "Drunk with Blood," or, more completely, "He who loves to become drunk with blood." Thanks to a thorough grounding in Vergil, I didn't even need to consult the dictionary for this one. Every word in the Latin language having to do with blood or getting drunk shows up at least once a page in the Aeneid.

Fustis Demens: Literally, "Senseless Club" or "Insane Cudgel." Probably supposed to mean either than he smashes those insane enough to fight him, or that he beats his enemies senseless.

Mons Latus: "Broad Mountain."

Lapicida Venenum: Literally, "Stone-Destroying Venom." I guess it means his hatred can shatter rocks.

Luctari Furor: "Madness to Wrestle" (meaning to be mad with the desire to wrestle)

Filius Tofus: No, not "Son of Tofu;" it's "Son of Tufa." Tufa, for the non-geologically minded among us, is a kind of volcanic rock.

Mola Saccus: "Stone Sack." This isn't a reference to how tough a Trow's family jewels are; it refers to the millstone which grinds grain and the sack which sifts it and returns the coarse part to the stone. In other words, this guy grinds his enemies to flour.

Pernix Ultor: "Swift Avenger."

Quercus Invidia: Literally, "Oak" + "Jealousy" or "Hostility." Probably supposed to be "Enemy of Oak," given the Trow--Forest Giant conflict.

Tegula Cutis: "Roof-Tile Skin."

Terramotus Calcitrare: Not grammatically meaningful, but with a bit of imagination, "Earthquake Kick."

Pulvis Ira: "Rage of the Arena," meaning the rage of a combatant in a wrestling pit or gladiatorial arena.

Quassare Vis: "Shattering Force" (literally, "force to shatter")
