In Response To: Re: Stupid Beta (Forrest)

Aiiieee, mad hex skeelz cominatcha here..

: "king of the hill" level is I'll Dance On Your
: Grave/Spiderweb (not sure which)

It's grave, and it's still referred to as this in the TFL tagset in final

: "landscape" level - I don't recognise this map.
: But there are colormaps and shadowmap in there;
: perhaps someone would like to turn it into a real
: working map? Perhaps some veteran hexeditor from the
: Good Ol' Days could decipher the differences in the
: mesh format (if any) and garner unit placement info
: from there.

You gotta pic of this? I think it's one of the levels that was shown in the first few screenshots of myth..not sure unless i see it, though.

: water was apparently implemented by having all water
: areas on a colormaps textured a certain shade of blue
: (cyan?), which was then retextured with a special
: "water" texture at runtime, and rendered
: from there.

Which is remarkably similar to the way it is now, just converting all of that data to an alpha channel, so to speak. Depth (in shipping) was set by the displacement map, with a media map defining where the actual water was.

: Metaserver config info is there. Could you run different
: (non-bnet) metaservers in the days of yore?

Technically, if you have the software, you still can. ;)
I'd assume this was in there for debugging reasons..i.e., the bnet server changed IP's, much easier to reconfig in the UI.

: Quit Dialog: "Do you really want to abandon your
: forces?"

I think this was deleted in shipped

: MELI tag called "grassland". What's MELI?

Mesh Lighting

: REVA tag called "water". What's REVA?

Reflection Values/Variables.

: MESH tags "king of the hill" and
: "landscape"

king of the hill = grave, still in there

: STLI tags

: Wight flavor "The Dwarves before Stoneheim"
: instead of "The Dwarves before Myrgard"

: Warrior flavor: "After the armies of the Great
: Southern Kingdom were finally broken at Juniper, the
: surviving soldiers scattered among the free cities of
: the North, taking their arms with them."

Still in there

: Myrmidon flavors: "During the Wind Age the combined
: armies of the dark cowered before the feared warrior
: race of the Myrmidons, but desirous of power and
: immortality they betrayed the light on the Plains of
: Tyr and joined Ashfear."

Ashfear references are still in TFL somewhere, I think.

: All-new flavor.

: Journeyman flavors: "Told of the rearguard at
: Bagrada in 1158: “Not a palm’s breadth free of wounds
: on his body, Five Moon Heron knelt to kiss the earth,
: and drawing strength from her rose to charge the
: thickest gathering of the enemy."

Whoo, this was *early*. The flavor here was featured in the first screenshot of TFL ever released, and would be related to the date of the building of the statues at Bagrada we see in the final game. I think. :)

: “Returning to the ruin Llancarfan had become in their
: absence, the emperor’s deathless Heron Guards each
: tore nine gold tiles from the palace wall, every one
: the weight of a grown man ... ”

You'll note Llancarfan is a M2 room now. Hrrrrm. ;)

: “ ... and hanging these heavy plates about their neck in
: penance for being absent when most needed, the Guard
: disbanded, each of the hundred choosing a different
: path into the waste.”

Most likely there were only 100 Heron Guard. Immortality goes a long way. ;)

: UNIT

: "warrior queen's guard" - queen who?

Note that this is in the shipping TFL as well. Never a reference to who the queen is, however. I'm not sure which levels it was used in, but i *THINK* covenant for the warriors defending the Codex.

Which makes you wonder what you originally were heading to Covenant to pick up, mmm? :)

: "soulless (deceiver fist one)" - yes, it says
: "fist", not "first"

These are used on The Watcher, and I think any dark map where the Deceiver is mentioned. The fact they were on the Watcher gives pause - why would the Deceiver's souless be protecting the Watcher?

: "journeyman (ce acetal)"

Guesstimate here is that ce acetal was the actual home (?) of the journeymen, probably a place of scholars? Considering the beta storyline differed a good bit from release storyline, i'd wager that where the emprorer ruled from and where the herons were at were different.

-NOTE-

These ramblings are based on my (admittedly ancient) knowledge of running around with various tools in the annals of TFL. If anyone has a burning desire to know, i can go back and find stuff™ again.
