If Soulblighter had given the Deceiver the opportunity to join him, I imagine he would have done so: he strikes me as being much more concerned with his own interests than the salvation of destruction of the world. The Deceiver doesn't care if Light or Dark is victorious, so long as he's on the winning side: his death in battle with Shiver strikes me much more as a case of plans backfiring than any kind of noble sacrifice.
