I really, really hate that use of that term. ISO is the International Standards Organization. They publish many many thousands of standards. ISO standard 9660 is the format used for most PC CDs (which is in itself a screwy concept, that you need a separate file system for different kinds of storage media). And because language is stupid, people started to refer to such formatted CDs as "ISO formatted" (when there are many, many ISO formats out there).
What you're talking about is called a DISK IMAGE, and there are many formats of them (.img, .dmg, .iso, probably others I'm not aware of). But for some stupid reason whoever designed some early PC CD-disk-image-making software decided that the filetype suffix of their disk images (all of ISO 9660-formatted CDs of course) would be ".iso". Everybody else who made Windows disk image software later followed suit. And now thousands of stupid Wintel users the world over think than an "iso" is synonymous with a disk image.
Sometimes I hate civilization.
