Consider this: Moaghim "taught" the Myrkridia the basics of organized warfare, such as rallying to War Standards. The Myrkridia still revere these standards, placing them atop their horrid skull platforms when not in use. Furthermore, Balor was enraged when Alric presented him with a Myrkridian Standard.
Perhaps Myrkridian Standards possess some sort of lingering enchantment (that may grow stronger over time) that call the Mykridia to rally, and distract and confound the enemies that view them. This would have made it easy for Moaghim to assign human standard bearers to lead Myrkridian packs.
It is possible that Balor was unaware of this enchantment, or that Alric enhanced it with his archmagery. Just another fact to consider.
