: Now hold on just a cotton-pickin' minute here (what does
: that phrase mean, anyway?).

: Fallen Lords don't just die and stay dead. There's some
: sanctioned language that states when fallen ones
: return from the dead they are stronger than before.
: That implies the fallen ones are *already* dead. I'm
: sure you knew all this. But the point is, Balor being
: dead, dismembered or decapitated wouldn't be enough to
: break the cycle.

I presume you're talking about the "Balor has been killed before, and each time it has only made him stronger" line. Since there's no hint elsewhere that Balor himself was ever killed and resurrected--nor that Fallen Lords in general are, since Myrdred and The Watcher seem to be wholly alive--we think Alric was talking about the Leveller in general--killed every thousand years, then comes back (and tends to be stronger because everyone is, after a millennium of progression.) He said "Balor" and not "The Leveller" because it'd take too long to explain the whole Cycle theory to a bunch of uneducated soldiers.

So what Alric was suggesting is, "We'll try and dispose of his head without destroying it, so that his spirit will be trapped inside and he can't reincarnate like the Leveller always has in the past." Of course, then the head blew up and he failed; although he probably anticipated that possibility, since he was conspicously absent from the disposal party. :-)

: I'll bet you *didn't* know that inside Balor's suit of
: armor is a bunch of machinery controlled by a vampiric
: gerbil mage, who pulls levers inside the helmet. He
: speaks through an enchanted loudspeaker, as gerbils
: don't usually have big voices.

They do if they're vampires...
