What is IT!?

Ever since I played Myth for the first time when it came out I've always wondered "What the hell is that island South West of the mainland" you guys know what Im talkin about? The reason I ask is because it always looked as though it had some dark tower on it and it looked as though it was important. Could it be one of those mysterious-not-on-the-map places that are mentioned in some of the flavor texts? Or is it some insignificant island.
