: other possibilites which are equally disturbing.
: I hate to sound like an alarmist, but the realist in me

: However, since Bungie (and AFAIK, no one from the

: Believe me, I WANT to be proven wrong. We have been so

: Anyone thinking along the same lines or am I alone on a

I think most of us agree that Take Two's Myth III won't be nearly as good as Bungie's would have been. However, the engine can't really help being better than Myth II--I'm sure they'll add the usual enhancements you come up with after a few years, like higher limits and higher resolution and a freer scripting language. And then the fan community can step in and take that engine and do wonderful 3rd-party things with it.

And most of them won't be anywhere near Bungie's quality either, I must admit. But they'll be much better than Take Two's. :-) Remember, Bungie games are somewhat anomalous in how, due to the extremely high quality of the official content (i.e. maps, units, etc.), their community depends very little on mods. Most other successful multiplayer games have much better engines than content, and so a huge chunk of their community relies on 3rd-party mods most of the time. It's not hard to see Myth moving in this direction.

And yes, it's a little sad that Myth is never going to give us a really good story again--but we've got Oni and Halo and Phoenix to cheer us up on that score. :-)
