Untamed Lands

I was just playing Chimera again and I thought to myself is this all set in the Untamed Lands? Quite a few places are named. I.e. Swans crossing and Brighton. What exactly was Kartuke trying to do, anyway? If he had taken out the main characters then what? Take on the West? I don't think so. One last question, where do Demon Lords come from? Oh, wait, one more, why are there people living in the Untamed Lands?
