An Anti-Anti-Bungie Rant

If you haven't been living in a bomb shelter you will already know about Bungie being bought out by Microsoft. You lament at their traitorous actions and whine as if their decision was akin to Roosevelt deciding to join the Axis forces during Big II.

Let me tell you this: if you are really concerned with software developers being on your side, don't own a Mac. Seriously folks, if you really cared about gaming you would own a PC. I can't think of anything more idiotic than missing out on tons of great games just because you are on a self-righteous crusade against Microsoft.

You say that you will boycott Bungie's products and that will really hurt them badly. Maybe you should realize that if the entire Mac gaming community dropped of the face of the earth (yes all three of you) no one would care. Bungie wouldn't care. Microsoft will be marketing their games. There are millions more PC users than Mac users. Anything the Mac community does to try and get leverage on the PC community is completely futile. Within 10 years, the Mac gaming community will cease to exist.

I used to be like you people. I owned a Mac and was stubbornly proud of it. All my friends would be talking about the latest games for PC, how good they were. I detested Microsoft and everything about it. Looking back, I can't believe how incredibly stupid I was.

Then I got a PC. It changed my life. I realized that it wasn't good to hate PCs. They weren't hard to use. They had three buttons, not one; this made it leaps and bounds easier to interact. There was an extremely wider selection of games. There wasn't a smiling little f*ck that grinned at you when you boot up your computer.

So when reading this, remember, I know exactly what it's like to hate Microsoft. I know exactly how you feel. Don't be that way. Hate is a four-letter word. I am now a PCer but I don't hate the Mac community.

To Bungie: You made the right choice. I'm glad you were thinking of our futures. Now we won't see you go bankrupt down the line some time. If you can't provide for the Mac community, so be it; we would rather have quality products backed by a marketing juggernaught than have a dying company struggle to make PC and Mac games without any financial support. Whatever platforms you decide to put your future games on, that's fine with me and probably a lot of other people.

--------------------------------------------------------
Some reaction from people I know upon hearing of Bungie being acquired by Microsoft:

"Yes! Now they'll stop making games for those Macheads and finally get some quality! Go Microsoft!"

"Woohoo! Halo for the X-Box!"

"Ha-ha I bet all those Mac-ers'll be mad, serves 'em right for buying a minority computer."

I'm not computer-racist, but a lot of people are. I just want to make one prophecy: Mac gamers, you are a dying breed. Enjoy Myth II while it lasts. Maybe you'll get a bit of a lift when Jinn comes out in 2003.

(Interesting tidbit: I am actually writing this post on a Mac. My friend is using the PC.)
