If you ask me, it's the concern with large and smalls in the soldier's diary that makes the plot great. In Myth, the entries' opening sentences can show this, ranging from The Last Battle -
'I am not afraid to die.'
to Bagrada.
'Damn, I hate the cold.'
It is the same in Myth II.
'Cruniac, who seems more interested in political maneuvers than military ones, agreed...'
'...[Cruniac] spoke of the bravery of the color guard, who died to protect him even as Soulblighter struck the killing blow.'
