I suppose it can be tied to the fact that they are bound to Balor and his energies stemming from the Light/Dark cycle - that he will reign until the hero of light kills him.
Or, we can do it the smarty pants way and use scientific reason to explain this phenomonon. I would suppose that magic triggers the release of dopamine and related chemicals into the brain. This can have the effect of reducing muscle loss, as well as sustain fat pockets within the lower portion of the eye and cheeks.
This would also explain why magic users have this thing called mana. Mana is just a representation of their current physical strength - the proteins required to produce dopamine and such would have to come from somewhere, and they can be replenished by resting, eating, and/or sleeping... Bleh, wierd theory :)
Also, can someone explain this Light/Dark cycle to me?
It is very confusing. I assume that it all started with the Dark reigning over the countryside and enslaving mankind and such, until a Hero of the Light rises and leads the people in revolt and kills the current Dark ruler in the year 500.
At year 1000 that Hero gets possessed by the Leveler, who comes and destroys the Light, until a new hero comes by and repeats all this...
It wouldn't make sense for the Light to start as the leading force, because they would not have a Hero of the Light for the Leveler to possess. Unless, of course, the Leveler just manifests himself onto the plain, gets defeated, and 500 years later gets his revenge by possessing the Hero that killed him.
