if the cycle is 1000 years light 1000 dark, or 500 of each doesn't matter for this question.
but the cycle you choose is important. are the years of the age set and exact? because if they are, could you not simply brak the cycle by waiting to win by say 10 years?
suppose the leveller is destroying everything, and is getting into his final power before the all out attack that will destroy mankind. well if mankind were not to have a hero, but to simply manage to prolong their fate beyond the years of teh cycle, would the leveller spirit lose anyway?

does the leveller usher in an age of darkness?
i seem to remember seeing this somewhere, but i can't remember. if so however would the leveller being killed end the cycle or would it just continue being a dark age without the leveller there to make it worse.
along with this theory, soulblighter may still be acting to fulfil the dark age requirement of the 500 or 1000 years, and therefore the cycle is not actually broken, but because of balor's death, its execution has moved on to different means.
