Odd, longish, post and question

My apologies if somewhere within the massive archives of the Great Library...er, Asylum, this has already been addressed, but I'm wondering.

Heron Guards and Journeymen can use mandrake roots to heal people. Is that a property of the Heron Guards (because of their special nature that makes them able to recieve immorality and the rest), of training (that they have learned and anyone else could presumably be taught), or of the root itself (so even an idiot could make sign language like gestures and babble and the root would heal)?

I know it says "Their healing ritual has its roots in the initiation rites of the Heron Guard, but what brings about immortality in a truly exceptional person merely restores the vitality of lesser men." in a flavor text, but that doesn't mean that knowing how to -use- the ritual is something only the Guard can do.
