Assuming Myth 3's story isn't completely awful beyond any possiblity of tolerable.
"...A line of Heron Guard made their way to their fallen Emperor. Each in turn snatched off their crane-emblazoned pendants and laid them upon the sword. Their lives now became devoted to one thing: the death of he who murdered their lord."
So why are the Heron Guard, when they return home to see Muirthemne has been "...buried under a mountain of rock and sand by Balor...", decide they've been so utterly dishonoured?
Because the Empire (other than themselves and a handful of others at most), not just the Emperor, is no more?
Because Bungie > Mumbo Jumbo, and the Myth 3 thing is inaccurate? (Based on our knowledge of the Heron Guard, such as it is, and what would be reasonable to assume to be the case from there.)
Any other theories, guesses, comments, warnings this has been discussed to death, dwarven ale, Herons forged of solid gold, Ibis Crown copies, anti-idiot nuclear missiles, Dream spells, Thrall hordes, Avatara, etc., welcome.
