Why?

There doesn't seem to be any concrete reason WHY Connacht, the great hero became Balor, total evil, or the same for Damas. What event changed them? Or was this all predestined. I always wanted to know about this. I think that Damas wanted power, too much, and Connacht...I dunno.

Someone...enlighten me please
