Did GURPS invent Runestones, or did Bungie?

Just wondering, because when I first got Myth and read the Thrall flavour text about Bahl'al discovering the Dream of Unlife by not taking a breath for nine days in his search for it, I always thought that his determination and will resulted in his 'discovrey' of it - after all, he must have been powerful to have not taken a breath for nine days, and since this was on the Thrall flavour I was instantly reminded of their underwater abilities, due to being dead. So in short, I reckoned that he caused himself to be undead in his search for the secret, and in doing so found it.
Then this whole runestone things apparently comes out of nowhere, and in my opinion mkaes the Watcher far more mundane, and Myth less mysterious.
