Some thoughts on Social Duty

This is totally unrelated to Myth, so any myth and myth only fanatics please just ignore this.

This is actually just a general discussion on principles of what the individual should do for the greater good.

Noblis Oblige is the duty of the nobles to protect and otherwise do "noble" things for the peasants.

In my words:

"The powerful have a duty to use their powers for the equal benefit of all."

So, what does this mean?
Does this mean that the strong should always help the weak, without seeking payment or glory or anything like that?

What is our Social Duty, as members of (mostly) free nations to our fellow citizens, and indeed, our fellow humans?

Do we bind ourselves to a code of honour? (British spelling makes it sound stronger, don't ask me why I think that)

Or are we justified in not looking out for the interests of others at all, and seeking our in survival in a dog eat dog world?

Should we fight for freedom at any cost or order at any cost?

Should we set up a truely socialist goverment?
A fundementalist?
A pure capitalist?
A what?

*is asking questions to get a debate started first, then stating his opinions after this gets going*

Note: this is a discussion of ideals, not realities.
