On the MWA boards I concluded that they were because in the section of this site that details early M1 files that were never used, the FGs originally had their Godhead in Forest Heart spewing big cunks of lava and spitting fire, and they threw sacks of severed heads called something like Tathlam.
I'm no expert on Celtic language, but that sounds Celtic, and Druids, who worshiped nature spirits, performed human sacrifices and stuffed the bowels of tree full of sacks of the victims' heads.
Violent stuff.

But wait, this never happens in M1, does it?

Of course not. Their Godhead is a pityful, forlorn figure being mindlessly burnt by Soulblighter's troops, and they don't throw heads - indeed, they seem like very amiable and wise people, not bloodthirsty savages they earlier were, and bemoan the poisoning of Iron's soul, probably because they detest War - it would fit in well with ehir new personalities. Much more like Tolkien Ents now, which would also mean that unless ROUSED by something serious, they'd be tree-ish and sedantary. Perhaps their forests were under attack and they went back to save their trees - like Tolkien Ents, maybe they guard trees - at any rate, they'd have a bond with them.
And like Tolkien Ents, they can still do serious damage. ;D
