Just a thought: Could the head be that of the Fallen Lord we never hear of? If we take into account the Forrest’s theory about the names of the Fallen Lords, and if we accept it (I do), we can determine the names of the Lords:
1) Soulblighter, a.k.a. Damas, Anshar, Twice Born, Patron of the Hanged
2) Shiver, a.k.a. Culwyeh, Ravanna, The Voiceless One, Mother of Plagues, First Lady of the Fallen, Loveless Child of the Unwed Dawn
3) The Watcher, a.k.a. Bahl’al, Mad Goat of the Fens
4) The Deceiver, a.k.a. Myrdred, Source of the Five Hundred Poisons
5) The Lurker, a.k.a. Bheil, Bonesplitter, Twice-born Daughter of Flood and Famine
6) The Faceless Man
I am going somewhere with this. Really.
As is pretty obvious right off the bat, The Faceless Man has no other known names. (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.) This is because no info other than that is known about the Faceless Man. We never see him mentioned in TFL or II, although I don’t know about III. I sort of doubt it though. At any rate, we know absolutely nothing about the Faceless Man, other than the name we use for him. All of the other Lords are at least mentioned, with a little info about them, in either GURPS Myth or within the actual games. Since the head must have enough power to somehow have lived for a thousand years (at least), and to have spent at least a few years without a body and buried in the an abandoned and ruined city in the middle of the desert, we can safely assume that he is at least at the same level as the Fallen Lord in terms of power. Now, if the Fallen Lords were all in major positions in relation to Connacht, which they were, and if we assume that the Head was telling the truth about being a former lieutenant of Connacht, then we can probably come to a safe conclusion that the head very well might have been one of the Fallen Lords.
Now (I say now too much, I know. It’s part of my tedious logical side, I think), since we know that the head could not possibly be Soulblighter, Shiver, the Watcher, or the Deceiver, as they all have their heads firmly attached to their shoulders, and the fact that the head really looks nothing like any of them. That leaves us with only Bonesplitter and the Faceless Man. Again, the fairly convincing argument (certainly more so than mine) of Forrest in determining the names of the Fallen Lords points out that Bonesplitter in probably also known as the Lurker, Bheil, and most importantly, Twice-born Daughter of Flood and Famine. The Head is almost definitely a male, so we can discount the possibility of the Head being Bonesplitter immediately. That only leaves the conclusion of the Head being the Faceless Man. And if you think about it, a few things fall in place. If a man happens to be headless, he would certainly be faceless as well, wouldn’t you say? And the fact that we know absolutely nothing about the Faceless Man means that its completely possible that the Head could be his.
The motive is probably the sketchiest place of my argument. However, its possible that the other Fallen Lords, or even Balor himself, did something or other in days long past to mildly offend the Faceless Man – perhaps even having something to do with his eventual beheading. The Faceless Man, being one of the Fallen Lords, probably could hold a grudge with the best of them, which would give him a very probable reason for wanting either the other Fallen Lords or Balor, again depending on which one offended him, dead, or at least to give them some trouble. The Head, upon being discovered by the Light, decides that it might try to take its revenge on the Dark, while still trying to kill off the Light, and decides to work towards both’s eventual destruction, effectively attempting to kill two birds with one stone (or head). Anyway, that’s my logic for you, and although it’s really pure sophistry, isn’t that true of all logic?
