I believe the turnip exchange you cite as occurring in "Into the breach" actually alludes to an episode of "Black Adder," a British comedy series popularized on PBS in the US back in the late 80's to early 90's. It starred Rowan Atkinson, of "Mr. Bean" fame. I know the recurring character "Baldrick" was quite fond of turnips, and something about that dialog rang a bell.
But I could be wrong-- I'm completely ignorant of Cheech & Chong lore.
