My perception of Myth III's Leveller *Spoiler*

The whole Mjarin as the Leveller thing still really bugs me (As I'm sure it does a lot of you). Therefore I propose a thoery that, although not canon (at least according to the game {let's not get started on the whole 'Not Bungie, not canon' debate again}), in my own little world will be the truth.

Moagim Reborn IS the Leveller. The cycle says so. Bungie said so in the previous games. Therefore it MUST be true, regardless of what Myth III says.

In my world, Mjarin is SIMPLY an opportunistic manipulator. Here's why I think this is: He is a educated man, a Warlock, and the Emperor's advisor. As a Warlock, he knows some of the Dark Magics; he might also know some of those magics origins as well as some of the history involved. As an educated man and the Emperor's advisor, he may have access to scrolls or other types of ancient writings that relay the history of the Cath Bruig. That history may give him knowledge beyond what is generally known. He may have figured out about the cycles, as well as HOW the cycle he was living in was about to end. With this knowledge, he knew that Moagim Reborn (the Leveller) was to be defeated.

Knowing that the end was coming for the Leveller, he had two options. Let Connacht be victorious and have the Emperor name him as his successor; or kill the Emperor before he had the chance. How do you kill an Emperor and get away with it? Let the Leveller do it. When the Emperor told Connacht that he was going with him, he seemed to be in a weakened state. I believe that Mjarin used Magics on him to weaken his resolve and to "suggest" that he go with the Legion. He bet upon the fact that if the Emperor was in the field, Moagim would probably be determined to kill him. With the Emperor out of the way, Mjarin could easily take the throne as the rightful next in line. And if Connacht figured this out, then all he had to do was get rid of Connacht and his men, and no one would be the wiser. That's why you see them fighting far away from Llancarfan, so no one in the city would know.

So what about Myrdred? Myrdred learned his magic from Mjarin in the game, but that doesn't mean that Mjarin is the Leveller. How do you think Mjarin became the top guy of the Warlocks of Scholomance? By being the best basket weaver? No, he knew some kick-butt magics! Myrdred just learned the Magic of the Warlock's and the few extras that Mjarin knew without (by Warlock definition) "selling his soul." Take the Binding dream for instance. What Dark Lord BESIDES Myrdred ever used it? The only thing similar (if not the same) to that is what the Trow had over the Oghres. The Trow didn't get that from the Dark, they got that from the Callieach. So, saying that what Myrdred can do comes from the Leveller isn't sold on me.

Then, when Mjarin was just a head in TFL (for those of you who agree with me that he IS the head), he still had enough of a beef with Connacht/Balor to try and destroy him (After all, Connacht is why he IS just a head now). But, on the flip side, still was a soulless Warlock who is most likely adverse to the Light. He was probably quite happy to kill both sides, but probably mostly wanted to kill his old nemesis Connacht/Balor.

Thinking on some of this also helps to explain the big loyalty the Warlock's had in SB to the Deceiver. Myrdred had learned from the greatest Warlock to ever live, and knew most (some?) of his secrets. He would be the obvious choice as their leader.

Okay, that's a good enough rant for now. Believe Myth III if you want. I'm just going to say to myself that the Mjarin as Leveller bit was a misprint or something.
