In Response To: Re: How long are we spoiled? (General Pepper)

: Fah, when I look at it I cringe at the story but in
: actuality the game itself has good potential, are
: there not any glitches in myth 2? Yes the game has the
: horrible doesn'tmakeanysense story but actually
: PLAYING the game I like. I'd much rather play a good
: game of Desert or creep using the myth 3 stuff than
: the myth 2 stuff. The lighting isn't that bad- dont
: complain in myth 2 the shadows were always the same
: angle no matter WHERE the lightsource was and often
: there weren't any at all.

Well, yeah. And to me it looked much much better. It's way easier on the eyes to have a little unobtrusive shadow that doesn't do much of anything than a standout shadow which is obviously doing the wrong thing. A related example: Myth 2's shadows are vague and blobby. Myth 3's are clear and crisp and exactly match the shape of the unit model. Is that a good thing? Nope. Because most of the detail on the model is in the textures, not in the polygon count. So each Myth 3 shadow is a stick figure, often with disconnected limbs because the joints don't quite overlap. That's obviously wrong, whereas Myth 2 shadows are so low-res that you can't even tell whether they match the unit or not. That is a preferable solution. (It also costs more memory; if they were gonna sacrifice memory to make the procedural shadows anyway, I don't really see why they didn't allow shadow-summing and thereby make the shadows perfectly realistic.)

: And Silicon im just HOPING you remember all the
: typos/mispells horrible glitches and general HORRIBLE
: UGLY NASTY HORRIBLENESS in version 1.0 of Myth TFL oh
: rooms that didnt work on bungie.net, tro kicking
: across the miles lightning jumping frome one target to
: the next, and all that.

Oh, I remember. But see, that wasn't a real problem for me. I rarely played MP and I never played ranked, so all I was concerned about was entertaining myself. Things like carpet bombing and chain lightning were basically just cheat code-equivalents to me...I never took competition seriously enough to care if I got owned by one of those tricks. I'd get owned in a fair fight anyway. :-)

Myth 3, on the other hand, doesn't allow me to play it. Between the framerate (which, I know, is an OS X problem, but I'm not booting 9 everytime I want to play a game for a sec, unless it's Marathon), the pause bug and the difficulty of fine-tuning move commands, I just can't tell the units what to do.

As for the typos and misspellings, those wouldn't be nearly as annoying if they weren't layered on to the attempts at flowery, poetic language. TFL sounded gritty, and that made typos a lot more forgivable and less noticeable. Plus TFL had a lot of misspellings corrected after the first patch.

The one TFL problem which really did bother me was the pathfinding--it was blindingly annoying to have units unable to get between allies four feet apart. And boy, Myth III really brings back old memories in that regard. :-P

Myth 3 has potential and at
: the momement I wish some people would get off b.net
: and get on myth 3 because I think the BIGGEST problem
: is the fact that only like 45 people are playing! The
: multiplayer=Goood!

Hey, if you like it, party on. :-) I agree, though, that quite a few people probably didn't get a fair crack at the MP because of problems with Gamespy that have since been alleviated, but that isn't the players' fault...

: and you dont really notice the
: arrow thing you mentioned in game, unless you look
: hard.

That's the thing, though...why add stuff where, if you're looking hard enough to see the effect at all, you're gonna notice its flaws?

By the way Im not actually saying the game
: ITSELF is good, it has problems with the systems the
: maps that were not made by bungie in the begining that
: came with it well... SUCK but the game has POTENTIAL
: overwhelming POTENTIAL...

Having looked hard at the editing side, I must disagree at the moment. :-) Maybe I'll dive back in if/when some major groups start forming, though.

: by the way once you get used to it vengeance isn't too
: bad it has tweakability in it that seems to work for
: me, given that in myth 2's release 1.0 of
: fear/loathing did NOTHING without a application error.
: and hey you can edit media directly in vengeance-Mesh
: Mode

Well, I can't, because I'm on a Mac and we can't edit any of that stuff. :-)

Admittedly, I'm sure you felt the same way with F&L 1.0...Mac and PC users got a switcheroo this time around, and it's certainly better for the player base as a whole if it's PCs which get the better deal. But I don't really want to wait around to see if I can eventually edit that stuff, because I've established that all the tag types I can edit right now--and functionally, they're the important ones--have little or nothing new to offer. Everything I ever wanted to do with the Myth II engine, I've done or figured out why I couldn't. Why retread the same ground in Myth III?

Actually, that's not true...I did want to try an RPG-equivalent with a persistent multilevel world, and I never finished my Myth II demo of that . But I can't do that in Myth III anyway, because I can't edit those tags...

: The game has potential... come on people dont just not
: buy it, they tried they got cut off but the game is
: still intact it might be a bit of a let down but the
: game is in no way a horrible game. now if we had a few
: hundered people on B.... erm Gamespy.net thingy it
: would be real fun...
: 'course i dont recall most of you on myth 2 bungie.net
: all that often either
: *sigh*
: That was my counter rant, people stop giving myth 3 a bad
: name before you own it have gotten some multiplayer or
: co-op time in it. And myth 1 had typos too

Why do I need to get some multiplayer time? I don't get a whole lot of enjoyment out of Myth multiplayer, except when cooping levels I'd already grown to love in solo. I played TFL and Myth II primarily solo, and if Myth III doesn't satisfy me in that area, that ain't my problem. :-) It isn't fun for me in the areas that I'm really interested about.

: BTW I think that while the story could have been executed
: better they DID at least TRY to counter a few things
: that were brought up like the tain, though they didn't
: make a whole lot of sense though they never did say
: who the head...omg i just realized as I wrote this who
: it is N.M...

I'd cut them a lot more slack on this--I mean, I'd still think the story sucked but it wouldn't severely annoy me--if it hadn't been for prerelease claims that

a) MJ story d00ds had read every scrap of Myth info in existence and were crafting them into a story rich and detailed enough to make strong men cry, and

b) it it was silly for us Asylumers to spend so much time on the old Myths' stories because Bungie really just tossed them off without thinking or caring about a deeper backstory.

After saying stuff like that, you'd better be prepared to lay something really frickin' incredible out there. :-)

Again again, I am totally happy with you thinking the game is great and having lots of fun with it. Obviously the game's being "good" or "bad" has no meaning except with respect to a particular player. I wish more people really liked the game, so you'd have more people to play with. Hell, I wish I liked the game. (I wish I liked every game, so that my entertainment required zero effort...) Maybe I will when my free copy of the full game does. If so, I'll be sure to let you know.
