That would certainly be the more literarily desirable option. :-) On the other hand, a human head is small, easy to lose track of, and difficult to identify. It could be that The Head was killed (however you kill a living, severed human head), but no one saw the one-fifth-of-a-corpse; or if they did, they didn't identify it as The Head.
