Why is the Sword Age called the Sword Age? Light Ages have names which make sense; Dark Ages don't too much…but is this a Dark Age?
Axe Age: a Dark Age, so perhaps it was a bit primitive, with axes and such?
Age of Reason: a Light Age, and it was the time of reason and knowledge for humanity.
Wind Age: a Dark Age, perhaps cold, drafty, uncomfortable, the Myrkridia like blowing winds across the land…
Wolf Age/ Age of Light: This was the most golden time for Humanity, so Age of Light is appropriate. Scholars named it after Connacht, the Wolf.
Sword Age: Why would the use of swords in this age be any different than before? Well, I got to thinking about the earlier part of this Age.
Somehow, when Muirthemne was sacked and the Cath'Bruig Empire destroyed, everyone forgot how to use a bow, it seems. Perhaps all the primary armies and most of the artillery were brought to the front of the earlier part of the Age, and were totally killed. The armies of the West, it seemed, would have to fight in melee only, which was terribly bad since the Dark had ranged units to easily take out the Light forces. I'm sure some jokingly referred to this new, obviously Dark Age as the Sword Age, as it would have to be fought only by sword and in melee combat only.
The Armies of the West were in need of good archers fast, and so they turned to the fir'Bolg for help. The fir'Bolg ended up filling out the ranks of artillery. The rest is history.
