King or Emperor?

In the level "Relic" says:(King Alric has sent us with The Deceiver to find a piece of the shattered Tain.)
But we see that Alric becomes Emperor in cutscene of the level "Redemption".
Also in the level "A Murder of Crows" says:(King Alric said nothing of a sneak attack before we left Muirthemne).
So why did the journal writer says KING Alric if he's EMPEROR Alric?
