I already posted this message on the wolfage.com forum, but it seems more in place here. For those of you that missed it: there's a enormously long thread between forrest and zeph that deals with the subject:

In my opinion, this question can only be answered if we know WHO Mazzarin was. It such an obscure figure...
Can any1 shed light on this subject. It seems like most ppl think of Mazzarin as a hero for the light cause. But it's never stated that he actually was. My theory (in response to a post by forrest) is the following:

Because Mazzarin is such an uber powerfull mage, mb he is in some way disconnected from the cycle. Mb his soul is so strong that he cannot be swayed by a leveller entity, mb he posessed alot of dreams and had an insight in the inner workings of Wyrd's great scheme...Mb he's enlighted and detached from it all....
As for the Watcher killing Mazzarin, it's in the games flavour texts, however, it never said WHY the watcher killed Mazzarin. If I read GURPS correct, Mazzarin was never an instrument of light or Dark. GURPS describes him as '1 other'. If Alric -by some crazy plot twist is indeed Mazzarin reborn, that would somehow describe why Alric is breaking the cycle: He's not connected to it....
