R.A.T. Race - A Sandbox Remake of Rat Race | |

R.A.T. RaceI've been hammering away at this map for a while. (Thank goodness I started it before I saw all the new tools we'd have for Reach Forge!). It's a faithful-as-possible remake of Rat Race from Halo 1! Look at Halo 1.
Now look at 3.
Now look at Halo 1 again!
Now back at 3!
Look at Halo 1 now. The wall has a teleporter in it.
Look back at Halo 3. It's a teleporter to that other side of the map you like!

The only thing I really had to not stay true to was the upper level. It was just not possible to do with the budget available and keep it.. Matchmaking compatible! This is the biggest reason I worked on this. The problem with the Foundry remakes of Rat Race was that Foundry wasn't big enough to get the scale right. Also, you could very easily jump out of them! Sadface. Then I checked Bungie.net for Sandbox remakes. There were some, decent, but had gaping holes everywhere and were very small (and usually built in the sky bubble for some reason). Not the case here. R.A.T. Race was made entirely with ATLAS guidelines in mind. Unless someone finds an out of the way glitch, you don't have to have honor rules to keep everyone on the map. Supports all gametypes! R.A.T. Race supports every single gametype Halo 3 has to offer. Although I wouldn't recommend a couple of gametypes due to the map's layout and size, I didn't leave any of them out to dry. The best ones I feel are Slayer and King of the Hill with 4v4. We had success in testing with 3v3v3 Slayer, too. I wouldn't try to push it beyond 10 players at a time. The teleporters and powerups adjust themselves for 1-sided gametypes. The power ups are not available in 1 Flag, 1 Bomb, or 1 sided Territories. The shotgun also recieves a reduced clip in one-sided gametypes. The lower teleporter also recieves and adjustment and only exits out to the bottom, to encourage teams to actually work to return the flag. Video tour! It's from a slightly older version of the map, but you get the idea.
No Bungie, We Heart You I've been working on this map for the past 2 months. Essentially having to float half the map off the ground to keep things a level walking path was a nightmare, and I hate geomerging because it doesn't let people edit a map easily after the fact in Halo 3. But I had to do it for this map to make it playable. This is pretty much my way of saying "thanks" for a job well done with Halo 3, and a proper send off to me ever doing any more 'serious' maps in 3's Forge. For Science(tm), this is going to be the first map I make in Reach's Forge World. I will compare how much easier and faster it is to work in Reach Forge versus 3 Forge and do a writeup. I'm also saving my 'clever rename' brain juices for the Reach version. I'm still wondering if I should post this to ATLAS. I'll let you decide. I'd like to hear feedback and any bug reports (missing walls, etc). I've done my best to make sure people can't escape in a normal gametype and prevent people from throwing objectives under the map (screw you gap next to the ramp teleporter wall that cost me 25$ of budget). Download Best played Halo 1 default style, AR/Pistol start. Works with BR and Sniper gametypes too, though. |
