Halo: Reach event rundown
Posted By: mnemesisDate: 6/16/10 3:45 a.m.

So, I was lucky enough to get an invite from Sketch to the Reach event tonight in L.A. and I figured, of all the Halo fans in the wide world, the HBO crowd would appreciate the info the most, because we rule! HBO! HBO! HBO!

Sorry, Laker fever got the best of me there. For those of you who have been to E3 and know how bad the traffic can be, imagine it with a championship game going on right across the street. What a collision of strange, unwashed cultures that was. Yeesh.

Anyways, I know some (most?) of this info has been reported already throughout the day, but I'm just going to go ahead and jot down everything I remember while I remember it because I'm old and forgetful and I don't want to forget any of the stuff that I might forget because... I might forget it... ...er... huh. Forgot where I was going with that.

Anyways, Firefight! Woo! Firefight comes with four basic, built-in modes: Default, Classic (ala ODST), Generator Defense, and Rocketfight. These are pretty self-explanatory, but if they aren't it doesn't matter, because Firefight is now almost totally and completely customizable. Things you can customize include: wave properties (which enemies, what skulls, what bosses, etc.), match duration (number of waves, rounds, and sets, all the way up to infinite), weapons (drops, players, which spawns, etc.), player traits and options (shields, health, speed, jump height, damage modifiers, armor abilities, respawn times, lives, loadouts, etc.), generator parameters (number, location, spawn order, loss conditions, etc.), custom skulls (up to three skulls can be created for a given match with a whole mess of modifiers that affect player and/or enemy traits), and enemy AI behavior ("shootiness", luck, dodginess, damage dealing, damage resistance, etc.).

In addition to all that, we had access to three 'new' weapons: the Fuel Rod Gun (you remember this, right?), the Concussion Rifle (I believe this killed me quite a bit), and the Target Locator. The Target Locator allows you to paint an area on the ground identifying it as the target for orbital bombardment. Yowza! The maps we played on were Waterfront (a nighttime map) and Beachhead (a daytime map). There was also a new armor ability - the Drop Shield - which provides both cover and healing to you and your team.

I'm sure you've seen gameplay vids galore by now, but one thing sticks in my mind as I think about it. Seeing a gold Elite running straight up the beach towards me, energy sword in hand, was an awesome sight. It was hugely satisfying, and I really felt it was put there for those of us who died countless deaths on that bridge in AOTCR so long ago, and wanted one more chance at that glowing bastard. Suck Plasma, Goldy!

Speaking of sucking plasma, canon fanatics will be aghast at the knowledge that there was a "beverages approved for Spartan consumption" placard on the bar. My camera was far too crappy for the low light, but Sketch thought he might be able to save one and get it to us somehow. I myself had a "Plasma Grenade" and it was... pretty tasty actually. Other noteworthy things present this evening were, in no particular order, awesome food, free drinks, a bunch of four-person Firefight setups, Nathan Fillion, William Mapother (combat dialogue in Reach, but possibly better known as Ethan in Lost - turned around at the bar and he was right behind me - thought I was a goner!), Usher (I think), a whole mess of Bungie/343 guys who were totally friendly and helpful getting everybody playing, Jen Taylor!, the Noble-6 voice guy, Urk (who is a nice guy), and you know those little picture frames that you load up with a few digital images and they cycle through them? - Those. All over the place. With 'candid' Halo screens on them - it was so cool! And lots and lots of excellent Halo: Reachy goodness.
